| The city was at its height between AD 500 and 700. It is believed that it was one of the most important cities of its day. Palenque's decline began in the 8th century and by the end of the century the kingdom more or less collapsed like all important Maya kingdoms did around this time. What lead to this collapse of the Mayan world remains unclear. | |
